The influence of the reformation on the modern world.

Interview with Bishop Sergey Ryakhovsky

In a memorable day of the 500th anniversary of the reformation, news Agency RIA Novosti published a thematic interview with the chief Bishop of the Russian United Union of Christians of Evangelical faith (RUUCEF- Pentecostal) by Sergei Ryakhovsky.

Since the middle ages, the reformation changed not only religious but also socio-political system. Today we live in a democratic society and have equal rights. But it was not always so. Here’s howthe Bishop RUUCEF explains this phenomenon:

«The fundamental principle of the reformation — the principle of universal priesthood means that man stands before God without intermediaries and is personally responsible for their actions. This idea became the basis for the formation of ideas about the fundamental equality of people in the State.»

«The Protestant community which is gathered not on the principle of class, gave impetus to the formation of civil society and citizen participation in public and political life. All these questions remain relevant today both for Russia and for the world as a whole,» he explained.

So, it is not surprising, many policy reformers, progressive academics, artists with a new vision turned out to be children of the reformation.

Max Weber, an internationally known sociologist, believed that positive change in the economy in the late 19th century Germany and the United States are also required to Protestantism – the values and principles of life of the Christians of this denomination have an impact on production: they worked conscientiously and with dedication.

Changes – the key to progress. But it is equally important to be prepared for change. A critical review of the man himself, of life, of society and of the world – these are the main conditions for a positive and peaceful reform, said Sergei Ryakhovsky. Any society needs reformation, and it is «quite natural», said the Bishop.
